The Cancéropôle Grand Ouest, SIRIC ILIAD, and the University Permanente will host a conference on Wednesday, March 15th, titled: THE MEDICINE OF TOMORROW IN ONCOLOGY.
Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide. In France alone, there were 382,000 new cancer cases in 2018. Gradually, with significant advances in scientific research and the rise of new technologies, treatments are becoming more effective and the patient care journey is evolving. But what do today’s discoveries tell us about the medicine of tomorrow?
The future of medicine will be:
- Personalized: Tailored to each individual’s unique profile (genetic, environmental, etc.).
- Predictive: Indicating the most appropriate treatments for the patient while attempting to avoid adverse drug reactions.
- Participatory: Patients will be active participants in their health and care, regarded as “expert patients” with theoretical knowledge and subjective experience from their personal journey.
The goal is to improve healthcare by preventing and treating differently.
Building upon traditional medicine and coupled with technological advancements, the medicine of tomorrow will focus more on the patient rather than just their symptoms, with special attention to their individuality.
Speakers at the conference will include:
- Eric Letouzé: Former head of the “Computational Analysis of Cancer Genomes” group at the Cordeliers Research Center, Eric Letouzé developed innovative bioinformatics tools for cancer genomics and contributed to the comprehensive characterization of various tumor genomes. As co-director of the “Integrated Cancer Genomics” team at CRCI2NA, he advances research in cancer genomics and bioinformatics, with a particular focus on multiple myeloma. He is also an active member of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC), the International Myeloma Society (IMS), and the French Myeloma Intergroup (IFM).
- Clément Bailly: A physician in the nuclear medicine department at Nantes University Hospital and at the IMRAM platform of IRCNA. He is also a lecturer in biophysics-nuclear medicine and a researcher in the nuclear oncology group of the mixed research unit 1232 Inserm-ERL 6001 CNRS. His research focuses on two complementary areas: the development of innovative radiopharmaceutical products for imaging and theranostic approaches, and the development of quantitative tools for interpreting and evaluating PET scans.
- Bertrand PORRO: A researcher in Humanities and Social Sciences and Public Health, and a psycho-oncologist at the Angers Medical School (ESTER team) and the Institut de Cancérologie de l’Ouest (ICO). He is also the head of the Humanities and Social Sciences department at the Grand-Ouest Cancéropôle. He is the co-coordinator of the REWORK research program at SIRIC ILIAD. Bertrand Porro has authored numerous articles on cancer survivors’ return to work, and on the adaptation and validation of psychometric tools in France.
